Challenge

The Boz the Bear children's series needed to trim the lighting and compositing budget. In addition it needed to increase the quality of the shots. Decrease the budget and increase the quaility, now that presents a real challenge!

Solution

The solution was threefold: a new light rig, new character shaders and compositing automation.

First a new and improved light rig was developed. By increasing the quality of the light rig and developing it to work with most shots, the time spent relighting and tweaking was dramatically reduced.

A new shader was developed so that the shadow side of the character had a much more pleasing hue. This new shader eliminated the five o'clock shadow on the human characters. Solving this problem allowed greater contrast in lighting without muddy shadows.

To reduce compositing time, the Nuke scripts were automated. First every repetitive compositing task was identified. Then the Nuke TDs at ReelFX created a utility that automatically generated much of the compositing script. This not only slashed compositing time, it improved continuity.

These improvements cut the lighting/compositing team from five to three and completely eliminated the overseas team.
